Just got back from a fantastic short break at Whitby.
The location of this hostel is phenomenal. We had a private, en suite room and chose to add breakfast each morning, we also managed to get parked in the hostels car park. For all of this we paid only £24 each per night.
The breakfast was fantastic - freshly cooked to order and there was also cereals, pastries, toast, fruit, juices and teas and coffee to help yourself to as you please.
We must give a special shout out to Tom who worked the bar both nights we visited - excellent, friendly customer service.
Yes the rooms are basic but ours was very clean and perfect for what we needed it for.
The only slight negative we had were doors slamming which shook our beds each time, and last night this happened constantly for nearly 2 hours. I understand, however, that this is an old building and it wouldn't stop us from coming back, I'll just pack ear plugs next time!

Perched on top of the hill just a few yards from Whitby Abbey and a few yards from the 199 steps leading into whitby town centre. As well as this it's only a few yards off the Cleveland way. Amazing. Must visit. Very well priced and good food options for breakfast and evening meals.

Warnings:|- Walking up the 199 steps from the middle of Whitby to the hostel, with a week's worth of clothes in a rucksack, isn't easy! (but absolutely doable!)|- climbing up stairs to a top floor dorm, with rucksack, having just walked up the 199 steps in order to check in, was a little hard work. ||Having said those warnings, it was aboslutely worth it. We had:|- Comfy beds|- Comfy enough space in dorms for occupants & belongings|- Clean bathrooms|- the option of buying meals from the cafe/restaraunt if we wanted, with a reasonable menu.|- the self catering kitchen was decent enough. We've stayed at places wiith slightly better equipped self cater kitchens, however this one was absolutely fine. ||Views out of the windows depends on what side of the building you end up on - dorm M8 has windows both sides; one side you can see out over Whitby, the other over the hostel car park into the back of the Abbey museum but you can just about see the edge of the Abbey ruins.||We did get offered, and took up, the offer of vouchers for a free visit to the Abbey (literally next door) which we otherwise wouldn't have paid to get in to with not being English Heritage members.

Great place in a beautiful setting at the top of Whitby. The rooms are basic as you’d expect, but I was a solo guest and had a massive private room with three bunk beds to choose from.

Absolute gem of a place! Our youngest had previously been here on a residential trip with his school and really wanted us to go too. So on his recommendation we booked. We really weren't disappointed. Yes, the rooms are basic, but it's a Youth Hostel. They were clean though and the facilities in the hostel, like the cafe, living rooms etc are great too. It's right next to the Abbey and is in a great location for getting to the town centre.
My only gripe would be that we had paid for tickets to the Abbey in advance of our visit, and once we checked in at the hostel we were told that tickets to the attraction were included in the price of our stay! Therefore, I think people should be made aware on booking or advertised as such on their website to save people wasting money on purchasing unrequited tickets.

YHA Whitby was such a lovely experience. The check in process easy and smooth. Always their staff friendly and helpful, offering the best information. The private rooms are spacious, bunk beds comfortable, communal areas nice. Self catering is very well equipped, maintained, and very clean.

Skvelý hostel! Zdieľaná kuchynka je dostatočne vybavená. Izby sú dobré. Poloha pri Whitby Abbey je naozaj jedinečná.

Booking error caused by their website which I didn't spot meant I had the wrong dates - not to worry, they had other dates that suited and were vacant. Nope - met with the absolute brick wall that is the total lack of customer service relating to a booking which was intended to be eight weeks from now. Now going through the Section 75 process to reclaim via my credit card as clearly they have no interest in providing any sort of customer service.
