This jewel of lovely Howey-in-the-Hills has reopened—finally!—after being closed because of storm damage to the boardwalk a couple years ago.

The reopened 1,300-foot boardwalk is better than ever with a sturdy ADA surface leading to a vantage point over Little Lake Harris.

It’s a beautiful walk among nature that serves as a peaceful sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of nearby SR 19.

The adjacent trail that runs to the alternate entrance off North Buckhill Road is worth experiencing as well.

Howey residents are justifiably proud of this nature preserve, a legit off-the-beaten-track place to see for all of Central Florida.

The photos of Sara Maude Mason Park look beautiful. So, we had to check it out.

Upon arrival, it looked a little unwelcoming. There is a small area to park at one end of this trail. This area also has a bench for picnics but no restrooms. There isn't a map or any details about the trail here...so we were a little cautious at first.

It ended up being a fairy short walk (10-15 min one way) emersed in vegetation, with trees shading 80% of the walk. There is a boardwalk area which is closed off from storm damage. I assume if this was open it would create a looped trail. But since it isn't, you just turn around when you reach the end (which also had a picnic table, no restroom).

We could hear the traffic occasionally, so although it feels like you are walking in a secluded area, the main road isn't far off. Overall, it was a pleasant experience that we enjoyed with our dog.

Update August 13 hiking trail is open picnic tables near both entrances. But the best part of this park the boardwalk is sadly still closed. Went by the park Aug 12 it's open. Still waiting for this park to reopen. I hiked the trails a while ago. Loved the boardwalk ending in a raised deck.

Nice walk on boardwalk though some of the boards are rotten and a large portion of the route is closed for repair. The regular path is like a dirt road, very wide, do not exactly like hiking a trail. The other entrance to the park where the playground is, us gated and locked. Do there are issues but it's a beautiful place. There is a spot for picnicking too.

Most of the boardwalk is down at the moment,im told by residents of howey,that it was damaged during one of the last hurricanes we had and they've just not fixed it.no other reason was given.but the half of the nature walk thats not on the boardwalk is still available to walk thru,its worth the walk we thought.

Beautiful park! Very peaceful and a lovely walk. I enjoyed the boardwalk, but one portion is broken from a fallen tree. I hope it gets fixed soon so I can explore that area as well.

There are swings and a small rock climbing wall. The entrance to the boardwalk was closed off, and being repaired. We were unable to walk on the boardwalk, so it was disappointing that we drove out for nothing. It would have been nice if that information had been available.
