We visited on a Monday morning in late December 2024. Unfortunately the visitor center is closed on Mondays but this was the only day we had time and were passing by the area.

There is a gravel parking lot which isn't the best for wheelchairs or strollers but there was a handicapped parking spot that was concrete and there was a concrete path to and through the butterfly garden. There wasn't much to see and it was a small garden. We just wanted to stop by to say we did it and hoped to get a passport cancellation stamp in our Blue Goose Book but the office was closed and there weren't even bathrooms that were open to the public when the office is closed.

Overall we probably wouldn't stop by again. If we were in the area we may stop by and see if we could get our Blue Goose Passport book stamped at least. If you have really little kids you could probably spend some time here letting them run around in the shaded butterfly garden but any elementary school aged children would probably be bored rather quickly. So many better things to see and do if visiting the keys.

Just a gravel parking lot with some informative kiosks, a small butterfly garden, and a visitor's center that was closed on January 12, 2024. It's probably not worth the stop, particularly if you're short on time. On the other hand it's nice to know that the refuge hasn't been developed to any great extent.

Nice little park, but there's no trails and the visitor center was closed mid-day on a Sunday. There is a nice garden with some butterfly info, but not much about crocodiles. The state park down the street does have a lot of trails, so they pair well together.

I knew this going in from other reviews. But were driving by and its a National Wildlife area. So have to mark it off my list. No animals here. No walking trails. A very tiny butterfly garden. 1 minute loop. Don't go out of your way for this.
